Quick picks (our opinion)

NordPassMost people: easy, modern, breach scanning in PremiumYes, one active session at a time
BitwardenBest free plan; open sourceYes, unlimited devices and passwords (per Bitwarden)
1PasswordFamilies who want shared vaults and polishNo free plan (paid, with promos)
Proton PassPrivacy fans and Proton users; email aliasesYes, unlimited logins and devices, 10 hide-my-email aliases (per Proton)

1. NordPass: our pick for most people

NordPass uses XChaCha20 encryption with a zero-knowledge design, supports passkeys, and includes a Data Breach Scanner, Password Health and email masking in Premium. Family covers six separate vaults. Personal plans have a 30-day money-back guarantee. Downsides: the free plan allows one logged-in device at a time, the best prices require a 1- or 2-year upfront term with higher renewals, and passkeys can't be exported. Details and sources are in our NordPass review.

2. Bitwarden: best free plan

Bitwarden's pricing page lists unlimited devices and unlimited passwords on its free individual plan, plus passkey management and sharing with one other user. It is open source. In our opinion its apps are less polished than NordPass or 1Password, but nothing beats it at $0.

3. 1Password: best for families who share

1Password has no free plan. Its site listed, for new customers in their first year with annual billing, Individual at $2.99/mo (regular $3.99) and Families at $4.49/mo (regular $5.99) for 5 seats. Pick it if shared family vaults matter more than price.

4. Proton Pass: best for privacy and email aliases

Proton's pricing page lists a free plan with unlimited logins, notes and devices, plus 10 hide-my-email aliases. Pass Plus was shown at $2.99/mo (40% off $4.99) with unlimited aliases, a built-in 2FA authenticator, Dark Web Monitoring and Emergency Access.

How to choose

  1. Need it free on phone and laptop? Bitwarden or Proton Pass.
  2. Want the easiest paid option with breach alerts? NordPass Premium.
  3. Two or more people? Compare NordPass Family vs 1Password Families.
  4. Already paying for NordVPN? Check whether your plan includes the password manager before buying another.
